The Relationships between Knowledge of Diabetes, Barrier and Compliance with Sick Role Behavior of Diabetic Patients

Abstract

|
Purpose: The purpose of the this study was to examine the relationships between knowledge of diabetes, barrier and compliance with sick role behavior of diabetic patients.
Method: Study participants were 177 outpatients and hospitalized patients for general study health examinations with type-1, 2 diabetes mellitus within 6 months by the department of Endocrinology, K General Hospital in Seoul. The data were collected by using selfadministered questionnaires from 4th January through 7th March, 2010.
Results: Knowledge of diabetes in oral medication treatment group(r=.327, p=.000) and insulin injection group(r=.284, p=.022) had positive relationship with the compliance with sick role behavior having statistical significance, while
the barrier with sick role behavior of oral medication(r=-.211, p=.011) and exercise(r=-.185, p=.014) had negative relationship with the compliance with sick role behavior.
Conclusion: Proper diabetic education and barrier management program should be provided for diabetic patients
to improve the level of compliance with patient role behaviors.
